Windshield Tour

2 Nov 09--Today was our last full day in South Carolina, so we decided to take a "windshield tour" of a couple places we had heard about that had nice views of the beaches and some nice houses. If you look at the map, you will see Charleston on the left, and directly east of it is Mount Pleasant, that is where you saw the aircraft carrier moored the other day. South of that is Sullivan's Island and also the Isle of Palms...you can't see the Isle on the map, but that is where we headed...just a short drive over a bridge from Charleston. By the way, if you haven't gotten it from my writing, I would definately come back here again....very nice!

Some of the houses on the Isle of Palms are really beautiful, as are the beaches. As a matter of fact the beaches reminded me of Maine and New Hampshire...where you have to go over a sand dune to get access to them. I think there are a lot of people with money here. Or maybe people who used to have money, because we saw a lot of "for sale" signs...haha.

From the Isle of Palms we headed over another bridge to Sullivan's Island, which is famous for 2 things: first and foremost it is the island, I mentioned this the other day, where all the slaves were held in quarantine when they were brought from Africa, and it is also home to Fort Moultrie, which was involved in all our wars from the Civil War thru WWII.

Fort Moultrie was heavily involved in both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, and mostly just a watch station during WWII, after which it was shut down.

From Moultrie you can clearly see Fort Sumter, which Moultrie bombed to get rid of the Union soldiers at the outbreak of the Civil War. Seeing as I could see Sumter, I decided to take a shot at it myself!

Even on Sullivan's Island there are a lot of churches. Notice this one right behind the cannon.

And look at these houses right across the street from the fort...sort of odd isn't it?

And then going back to the Isle of Palms for a minute, this is a flag off the dock of someone's house. I think there are still a few issues here!

After we went back to the RV, we took the dogs for a walk and to get a few pictures of planes on display here. I figured Jack would like to see them.

And here is Fluffy, Jabba and Cathy on our walk back. Fluffy is actually running (see her ear), Jabba is taking her time, and Cathy is trying to encourage them. Notice how happy the dogs make Cathy!

  1. Fluffy looks like she's running....with her ears flying up....probably doesn't happen much with her eh?

  4. Very impressive stuff. As far as them having issues, I believe they still think they are not part of the Union!!!
