Got Babies?

20 Jun 2010--Yesterday we went to the state's history museum and the Governor's Mansion, but 1st I thought I would show you a few baby antelope we saw on base. These 3 were all together, and we only saw one mother around, so we are not positive, but maybe they are triplets?! Look at the one on the right...adorable, huh?! Wait till you see the videos at the end. You are going to love it!

We were disappointed that the museum people wouldn't let us take any pictures because it was a pretty good museum. From dinosaur remains to Native American artifacts, they had a lot to look at. I can understand the dinosaur stuff being protected from the cameras, but a chuck wagon? This decorative boot was on display outside the museum. The entire toe section is made up of state license plates.

Here are a few facts about Wyoming I found interesting:
- It is the least populated state in the country, with only 530,000 people.
- Because of its low population and wide open spaces, Wyoming was made a principal site for the country's nuclear missiles. In the early 1960s, hundreds of nuclear-tipped missiles were spread over southeastern Wyoming.
- Of the estimated 750,000 antelopes in the country, over 400,000 call Wyoming home. The antelope the fastest animal in North America, reaching speeds up to 60 MPH.
- There is more coal mined in Wyoming than anywhere else in the country...24% of what we produce comes from here.
- The state encompasses 98,000 square miles, with 59% of that short-grass prairie.
- Established in 1887, the University of Wyoming is the only 4 year college in the entire state.
- Chief Washakie, the Shoshone Chief that there was a statue of in the Capitol, lived to 102 years, was Chief for 60 years, and never made war against the US. He was buried with military honors when he died.

Here is the former Governor's Mansion, built in 1904 and housed all Governors until 1976 when a new one was built. Visitors can view the new one too, but only on Tuesdays, so we will be gone.

They renovated this house in 2005 and did different rooms in different periods of history; 1905, 1937, and 1960.
When the 10,000 sq ft house was built, it had indoor plumbing, hot water heat, and combination gas and electrical fixtures throughout. This entrance hallway still has the light that had both electric, and as a back-up, the gas fixture on the left (1905).

The Dining Room was restored to its 1937 look. This is only the 3rd set of furniture in the history of this room.
The kitchen looks almost identical to its 1937 self, with a state of the art 1937 Magic Chef gas range. It has 8 burners on top, and 3 ovens, a broiler and a warmer!

In the basement there was a staff room, and in it is this 1947 TV that cost $750.00 back then. I couldn't open all the drawers, but it has a TV, an AM/FM radio, a record player, and even a short wave radio.

This is just a lamp outside the den, but very Wyoming!

The sun room was restored to 1960 era.

This is a picture of Nellie Ross, the Governor of Wyoming from 1925-1927, and the 1st woman governor in the country.

We stopped by the Cowgirl Museum on a lark, thinking it was sort of cheesy, but it was much better then we thought...we actually ran out of time...they closed before we could see everything.

If you are my age or older you should remember the TV series "My Friend Flicka"...the woman who wrote the book it was based on comes from here.

Of course there is Dale Evans of Roy Rogers fame...but did you know that Dale Evans was Roy's 2nd wife??? We actually read this in Roswell, NM where Roy was born, but forgo to tell you about it (haha). No one said what happened to the 1st wife, so we assume a divorce.

We have Annie Oakley, Calamity Jane, the 1st woman mayor, Sacagawea and others. And when you read this stuff you realize 2 things: One is that the west was way out front of the country as far as women's rights were concerned...even if sometimes as a joke, and second is that there were a lot of really tough women back in the late 1800s and early 1900s. If you go to a rodeo today, you will see women barrel racing and that is it. These women we were reading about it did it all!

And here a few of the outfits on display. You gotta love them!

These are a few of the videos we shot seperate from the antelope babies you saw earlier. Enjoy!

Where is the other baby?

Running to Momma.

Walking away.

  2. "Spindley" legs, meaning skinny! You would never get close enough to feed them. If you are in your car you can get to about 10 ft away if they are standing by the side of the road, but they are wild, so if you get out of the car they might let you get to about 15-20 yards of them, but will then run away. If it was hunting season, you wouldn't see them at all.
